National Ujjwala Day is celebrated in India on 20th April every year. This day marks the anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which was launched on 1st May 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The PMUY is a social welfare scheme aimed at providing free LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) connections to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households.

The main objective of the PMUY is to provide access to clean cooking fuel to women from economically weaker sections of society, who were previously using traditional cooking fuels such as firewood, cow dung, and crop residue. These fuels are not only harmful to health but also contribute to environmental degradation.

The scheme has been implemented by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and it aims to distribute 80 million LPG connections to BPL households across the country. The scheme provides financial assistance of Rs. 1600 per connection, which covers the cost of the security deposit, regulator, and hose.

Since its launch, the PMUY has been a huge success, and it has been able to provide clean cooking fuel to millions of households across the country. The scheme has not only improved the health and well-being of women but has also reduced the workload on women who were previously spending hours collecting firewood.

On National Ujjwala Day, various events and activities are organized across the country to raise awareness about the benefits of clean cooking fuel and to highlight the achievements of the PMUY.
