18 April - World Heritage Day

● 18 April - World Heritage Day

World Heritage Day, also known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites, is celebrated every year on April 18th. This day was established by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1982 to raise awareness about the importance of protecting and preserving cultural heritage sites around the world.

The aim of World Heritage Day is to promote awareness of the rich cultural diversity and historical significance of these sites, as well as to encourage people to take action to protect and preserve them. This includes promoting sustainable tourism practices, educating communities about the importance of preserving their heritage, and advocating for the protection of these sites in the face of threats such as climate change and urbanization.

Each year, World Heritage Day has a specific theme. Past themes have included "Cultural Landscapes" in 2012, "Heritage of Education" in 2016, and "Complex Pasts: Diverse Futures" in 2021. The theme for 2023 has not yet been announced.

World Heritage Day is celebrated around the world with a variety of events and activities. These may include guided tours of cultural heritage sites, exhibitions showcasing the history and significance of these sites, cultural performances and festivals, and community clean-up efforts to preserve and protect these sites.

The UNESCO World Heritage List currently includes over 1,100 sites around the world,
